He glanced at the shop windows around them—
all gleaming like still water. In every pane, his
reflection lagged behind by a breath.
“Someone’s watching,” he said.
“Not someone,” she whispered. “Something.”
They ducked into the metro station, dripping,
shaking. The hum receded, replaced by the normal
clatter of trains. Henry leaned against a pillar.
Carolina spread the memo pages across a bench,
each already smudged by rain.
“Phase III is active,” she said. “Phase IV
mentions a Curator Protocol. No data yet.”
“Curator?” Henry repeated. “Like a librarian.”
“Or a god,” she said.
He watched water run down the tunnel wall,
catching the fluorescent light. It flowed strangely,
stopping in mid-drip before resuming. Time itself
seemed to hesitate.
He took her hand. “Jinji sent coordinates.
Tangier. If she’s alive inside that network, she’ll
know how to kill it.”
Carolina closed her laptop. “Morocco’s outside the
EU grid. The Mirror’s reach is weaker there.”
“Then that’s where we start.”
