Find Your Style
My old mentor F. X. Muldoon put it in the simplest
possible terms: “Wear great clothes—more peo-
ple will listen to you.” Yet despite the fact that
we may believe he was right, many of us are so insecure
about or indifferent to our appearance or our fashion
sense that we don’t try any improvements in the ward-
robe department until it’s too late. We’ve made our first
impression, and it’s not that great.
Creating a link between how you look and how you
work can give you a competitive edge in business.
When people first encounter you, they respond to your
attitude—the unspoken message you project as you
enter a room. Part of that message is your style or your
lack of one. Your present style, or manner, has probably
been influenced by those with whom you grew up—your
family, your peers, your heroes, even the celebrities you
admired. Now is the time to honestly assess what your
style says about you and make sure the message is one
that benefits you.
