The Name Game
As companies grow and become national
or even international, many people face
the chilling experience of frantically trying to
remember who’s who on those few occasions when
large groups get together. If you see someone
you’ve met before but don’t remember their name,
make the first move and reintroduce yourself. Jog
their memory with a line like, “Good morning, I’m
Elizabeth Davis. We met recently at the Cougar
Global launch. It’s good to see you again.”
If this were a game of tennis, it would be like putting the
ball in the other person’s court. The person either knows
she is supposed to reciprocate and send it back and will
do so naturally, or you can encourage her to do so. The
point is that you have to set the person up to reciprocate.
Within reason, you can include multiple tags in your own
introduction. “Hello, I’m Jeff. I live in Beaverton and I read
about this meeting in the local paper.” The circuits are
laid. Either the other person will respond in kind with her
own information or you can nudge her along with a few
nods and encouraging words. What you end up with is
information about the other person that can be used to
rev up a conversation and really connect.
