Float Like a Butterfly.
Sting Like a Bee
In 1964 Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) turned the
boxing world on its ear when he called heavyweight
champion Sonny Liston a “big ugly bear” and declared
that he himself would “float like a butterfly and sting
like a bee.” His evocative words are good examples of
simile and metaphor. A simile is a way of comparing
one thing to another by using the words like or as.
“Talking to shipping is like talking to a brick wall” and
“the receptionist is as cool as a cucumber” are both
similes. A metaphor is almost the same thing, except it
doesn’t use like or as to make the comparison. “We are
a mighty river carving our own path” is a metaphor, as
is “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”
For the sake of simplicity, Muldoon lumped similes
and metaphors together and called them I-KOLA. Once
you get the hang of it, you can omit the “it’s kind of
like a . . . ” if you wish. I-KOLA is just a device to get
you going.
Similes
Examples: My checking account is like a bottomless
pit. These flight controls are as sloppy as a raw
sausage. This air conditioner sounds like someone
chopping wood in a submarine.
