Connecting with
Human Nature
Every time you say hello to a stranger, the person
unconsciously decides whether to run, fight, or stay.
Dozens of snap judgments are made in a flash, at the sub-
conscious level. You’ve heard people say, “I knew I liked
her the moment I met her.” But how does this all happen?
It happens because it’s part of the original wiring of
the human animal. Once the “like”/“dislike” filters are set
up, everything else is influenced by the initial instants of
every encounter: If I like you, I see the best in you, and you
can do no wrong. But if I don’t like you, there’s nothing
you can do right.
We can’t stop people from making snap judgments,
but we can make those judgments work in our favor. This
section deals with the new rules. They build on what
Muldoon taught me, what scientists and experts have told
