EXERCISE
Playing with Personal Space
Grab a friend, a colleague, or someone else you want to
have some fun with and try this.
Stand about twenty feet apart, facing each other. Tell
your friend that right now you are in her public space and
you are going to walk toward her very slowly, and you
want her to nod or say “Now” when you enter her social
space. You should be able to anticipate her response
just by watching her body language. Once she has let
you know you’re in her social space, continue slowly
approaching and tell her to indicate when you’ve entered
her personal space. Again, you’ll probably be able to read
it in her reactions. Finally, after she’s let you know you
filters aside and look at the person again through gentler
eyes, and you may be pleasantly surprised by what you’ve
been missing.
Personal Space
One of the easiest mistakes to make during the first
ninety seconds of any encounter is to misjudge how
much the other person needs their personal space. A mis-
take here can trigger a truly deep-seated response.
