food when you eat, the sounds around you
when you walk.
It wasn't about becoming a monk. It was about
developing a skill, a mental muscle, that could help her
navigate the challenges of her life with more calm and
clarity.
Billie started small. She began with 5 minutes of
guided meditation each morning. She sat in a quiet
room, closed her eyes, and focused on her breath.
Her mind wandered. A lot. She got frustrated. She
felt like she was doing it wrong.
But she stuck at it. She remembered the teacher's
words: "Don't judge your thoughts. Just observe
them."
Slowly, gradually, she started to notice a shift.
Her thoughts were still there, but they didn't have
the same power over her. She could observe them
without getting swept away by them.
She started to incorporate mindfulness into her
daily activities. She paid attention to the feel of the
keyboard as she typed, the warmth of the sun on her
skin, the sound of her own footsteps as she walked.
