DEEP REST
He looked at the dark, ominous opening, then at
Vega, a man who radiated competence. "Are you sure
about this, Mr. Vega?"
Vega met his gaze. "Once a job starts, O'Connell,
it finishes. Let's go save your doctor."
The Director. The Breakthrough.
The Director watched the monitors. Evelyn’s
neural resistance was finally breaking. The data
streams, once chaotic, were now flowing smoothly.
"We have it, Director!" Dr. Volkov exclaimed, her
voice trembling with excitement. "The full protocol!
The precise frequencies! The complete methodology.
Evelyn lay motionless, her eyes closed, her
breathing shallow. Her mind, ravaged by the invasive
probes, was a blank slate. She had fought, but they
had won.
"Excellent," The Director purred. "Upload the
data. Encrypt it. And prepare for replication."
He looked at Evelyn’s still form. "And now, Dr.
Hayes, your usefulness has come to an end."
He nodded to the lab coats. "Initiate the final
procedure. Ensure there is no trace. No evidence.
Just… a tragic disappearance."
Evelyn felt a cold hand on her wrist. A needle.
She was moments away from oblivion.
