DEEP REST
no expensive long-term therapy, just a state of deep
rest? That would be a financial catastrophe for some
very powerful people.
Paranoia, she told herself. Grief-induced delusion.
She was grasping at straws, desperate for an answer, a
reason, a way to undo what had been done.
But the seed was planted. A tiny, dangerous seed
of suspicion.
She spent the next seventy-two hours in a trance
of research, fueled by stale coffee and a growing sense
of urgency. She cross-referenced Finch’s obscure
references, delved into ancient spiritual practices that
hinted at deep meditative states, even explored fringe
theories of consciousness. She found echoes,
whispers, tantalizing fragments of information that,
when pieced together, began to form a coherent, if
unbelievable, picture.
Deep Rest, or "Somnus Profundus," or "The Great
Stillness," or whatever name it went by, seemed to be
a universal, innate human capacity. A biological reset
button. But it was incredibly difficult to access,
requiring specific conditions, deep focus, and a
detachment from the constant noise of the modern
world. And it seemed to have been systematically
suppressed, or simply lost to time.
The more she dug, the more she sensed an unseen
hand trying to guide her away, to obscure the truth.
