Chapter 3:
The First Spark
The Lab.
It was late. The university campus was a ghost
town, save for the hum of HVAC systems and the
occasional security patrol car. Evelyn’s lab, usually a
sterile, brightly lit space, was now bathed in the dim
glow of computer screens and the soft, rhythmic blink
of her high-precision EEG machine.
She had dragged it from its usual spot, closer to
the soundproofed chamber she used for sensory
deprivation experiments. The chamber wasn't perfect,
but it was the best she had. A small, enclosed space,
designed to minimize external stimuli. Perfect for
inducing "The Great Stillness." Or, at least, attempting
to.
She was nervous. Her hands, usually steady,
trembled slightly as she attached the electrodes to her
scalp. The gel was cold, clinical. She glanced at her
