described. Her conscious mind was receding, but she
wasn't unconscious. She was aware, but detached.
Observing.
The brainwave patterns on the EEG screen outside
the chamber began to shift. Her delta waves, usually
associated with deep sleep, deepened further,
becoming almost flatline. And then, slowly, the
oscillation began to appear. A rhythmic pulse, exactly
as depicted in the ancient book.
Evelyn felt it. A gentle, internal vibration. A
cleansing. It was as if a thousand tiny hands were
gently scrubbing away the grime of her despair, the
residue of her trauma. The guilt, the grief, the fear –
they were still there, but they were distant, muted.
Like echoes in a vast, empty hall.
She saw images. Not dreams, not memories.
Something more fundamental. Colors, pure and
vibrant. Shapes, geometric and perfect. A feeling of
vastness, of interconnectedness.
She saw Mallory. Not the broken, defeated
Mallory of her final days, but Mallory at ten, laughing
on the beach. Mallory at twenty, painting with fierce
concentration. Mallory, whole and radiant.
But this time, it was different. It wasn't
consuming. It was acknowledged. Processed. As if the
pulse was not just clearing neural debris, but also
