lurched forward, gaining speed, plunging into the dark
tunnel.
"My family," Liam said, his voice cracking.
"They'll be looking for me. They'll be worried."
Evelyn reached out, placing a reassuring hand on
his arm. "They'll be safe. They won't know you're with
me. And they won't know about… this." She gestured
vaguely. "We need to keep them out of it. For their
safety."
He nodded. The fear for his family was a new, raw
sensation. It was a testament to the power. It had
stripped away the apathy, leaving him vulnerable, but
also intensely alive.
"What do they want with us?" he asked, his voice
low.
"The research," She replied, her voice grim. "The
knowledge of The Great Stillness. It threatens their
entire industry. Billions of dollars. They can't let it get
out."
"So… they'll kill us?"
She met his gaze. "They'll try."
The train rattled on, a metallic beast hurtling
through the underground. Evelyn pulled the book
from her bag. "This is it, Liam. This is what they're
after. And this is what we have to protect."
