She remembered. She had called him in her initial
search, before she found Finch’s paper. She had
forgotten.
"Just… ignore that, Silas," she said, trying to
sound casual. "I just need a place. Tonight."
Another pause. "Very well, Evelyn. The key is
under the loose brick by the back door. Don't make a
fuss. And don't bring any trouble."
"Thank you, Silas. You won't regret it."
She hung up, her heart pounding. He knew. He
knew about "Somnus Profundus." And if he knew,
how many others did?
They emerged from the subway into a quiet,
residential neighborhood. The old bookstore was a
dark silhouette against the streetlights. Evelyn limped
towards the back alley, Liam supporting her.
The key was there.
They slipped inside, into the musty darkness of
the apartment above. It was small, dusty, filled with
stacks of books and the scent of old paper. But it was
safe. For now.
Evelyn sank onto a worn sofa, pulling off her
shoe. She needed a first aid kit.
Liam, surprisingly, was already moving. He found
a small bathroom, a dusty medicine cabinet. He
