how they operate, we can fight back. We can expose
them."
The building shuddered. A heavy THUD echoed
from the floor below. They were inside.
"They're breaching the ground floor," she said.
"We have minutes. Maybe less."
She pulled Liam towards a large, overstuffed
armchair in the corner, surrounded by towering stacks
of dusty books. "Get in. Quickly."
Liam hesitated for a split second, then obeyed. He
sank into the armchair, his body tensing.
Evelyn began to work franticly. She grabbed old
blankets, draping them over Liam, creating a
makeshift cocoon. She pulled down a thick, velvet
curtain to block the harsh glare of the searchlight from
the window. She needed darkness. She needed
stillness.
"This isn't ideal," she muttered. "No proper
soundproofing. No EEG."
"It's too loud," Liam whispered, his voice barely
audible over the helicopter. "I can't focus."
"You have to," she said. "Remember the feeling.
The hum. The chimes. Let them guide you.
Surrender."
