NICHOLAS BOOTHMAN
He started walking, limping deeper into the
woods, guided by a new resolve. He would find
Cassandra. He would tell his story. And he would save
Evelyn. Or die trying.
The Facility. The Director's Office.
The Director watched the monitors. Evelyn was
proving more resilient than anticipated. Her brain,
somehow, was resisting their advanced probes.
"Increase the frequency," he ordered. "We need to
break through that resistance. Now."
He then switched to another monitor, showing a
thermal image of Liam O’Connell, a faint heat
signature moving through the dense woods.
"He's heading north," an operative reported.
"Towards the old highway."
"Good," The Director murmured. "Let him run.
He's lost. He's injured. He'll eventually lead us to
whatever he thinks will help him. And then, we will
collect him. And silence him. Permanently."
He leaned back in his chair. Evelyn was a
challenge, but a solvable one. Liam O'Connell was a
minor inconvenience.
The future of Helix Pharma, and the suppression
of Deep Rest, remained secure.
For now.
