She paused, her expression turning serious. "I live in
New York now; I work for the UN. But something bad
has happened. My mother told me that Tomaz was in an
accident - he fell out of a hot air balloon.”
“You’re joking!”
She said for me to find you and tell you."
"What's going on?"
"I'll tell you everything, but please, come with me,"
"No, tell me now. Is he... alive?"
She hesitated, then nodded. "Yes, he's alive. But we
need to go. Now."
Francesca took my hand, her expression somber.
"Come with me," she said, leading me out of the
cathedral towards a waiting limousine.
As we glided away from the curb, I asked, "How did
you find me?"
"Your publisher gave me your handler’s number," she
replied. "I saw you leave St. Patrick's and followed you."
Her urgency was palpable. "I'm flying to Faro
tonight. You can come."
My mind raced with resistance—all the reasons I
shouldn't drop everything and follow her. What about
my commitments? The deadlines looming? The carefully
laid plans? My family?
