SPONTANEOUS SUCCESS
A commotion broke out across the room. A drunk
English woman was yelling at a much younger guy, who
was just as intoxicated. She threw some money on the
table and shoved him out into the daylight.
"What's wrong with people?" I wondered aloud,
baffled by the woman's outburst. “Why does he put up
with that behavior?"
"What behavior?" Thomas replied.
"She's angry and being really crude."
"She's not angry, she's afraid."
His words hung in the air. "Fear fuels everything," he
explained. "Anger, hate, procrastination, even guilt - they
all stem from fear. Perhaps she's afraid of losing him, or
maybe she's afraid of being discovered." He paused,
letting his words sink in. "You don't know the truth,
Nicko. None of us do."
"Instead of judging," he continued, "try to see the
truth. Life's a chain reaction, and every choice we make
ignites the next link. Anger or fear? Judgment or truth?
The choice is yours."
His words resonated deep within me, but a nagging
feeling persisted, a sense that something was amiss,
something lurking beneath the surface of this idyllic
village.
