Laughter erupted among the other kids; one of them
even had the cheek to say, "Are you serious? Have you
ever looked in a mirror?"
It's moments like these that make you question your
confidence. I’m six-foot-four with red hair and freckles.
Maybe they had a point, but I wasn’t going to let a bunch
of naysayers get me down.
The lead guitarist‘s name was Andy. The next
morning, the band was in his parent‘s front room
auditioning for a singer. There were six of us trying out;
I was the last up.
Andy handed me the microphone and twanged out
the opening riff, and right at the spot where I was
supposed to come in, I froze. You see, deep down,
although I had this brilliant idea for getting a girlfriend,
there was just one tiny problem: stage fright. I am
terrified. The thought of standing there in front of those
people and singing my heart out was paralyzing.
Andy kept the riff going and going, but I couldn’t do
it even though I‘d practiced in the mirror tons of times
overnight. It was like there was this plexiglass barrier in
front of me. I could feel it. I was right up against it. I
could push it, see through it, and bend it, but I couldn’t
get the first word out. Andy stopped. I was trembling
