Back in my advertising days in London, I was
indoctrinated into the mantra "Ready, Fire, Aim!" - act
now, figure it out later. And bang! It just went off in my
head.
"Yes."
"For sure?"
"Yes."
He made a quick phone call, then said. "OK. You’re
on." Just like that! What had I gotten myself into? I
didn't know the first thing about photography.
With the help of the newspaper’s fashion editor, I
found the best models in town, the best hairstylist, the
best make-up artist, the best stylist, and a seasoned
wedding photographer with his own studio. I confided
my innocence to the stylist and she discreetly told me
every good move she'd ever seen a photographer make.
When the 16-page supplement was published the
following Saturday, it included a small text box in the
center of the opening spread that said, "Photos by Nick
Boothman."
On Monday evening, my phone rang.
"Hello Nick. This is Sydney Baker. I’m the fashion
editor at Fair Lady Magazine. I saw your pictures in the
Cape Times, and I’d like you to shoot a spread for us."
