Fair Lady was the most popular women’s magazine in all
of South Africa at the time.
Busted!?
"Oh, that’s great, thanks,” I said, desperate to get out
of this because I didn’t actually take the pictures, I just
told the models what to do and the photographer took
the shots, “but I’m really busy."
"Well, dear, we shoot three months ahead, so I’m sure
we can make it work."
Jeepers. Now what? "And I’m very expensive." I said
turning up the heat.
"Listen, love," Sydney came back, "we’re not the best
payers in the world, but we want you to shoot eight
pages, and we pay three hundred Rand a page."
A huge flash went off in my head. At the time, I am
earning sixty-five Rand a week. I think he just offered me
about six months wages for a day’s work.
Ready, Fire, Aim!
"Ok. That’s great." I said still in shock.
"I’ll be in touch." He said and hung up.
Now what?
We were living in a suburb of Cape Town called
Wynberg. I walked past the Wynberg Pharmacy every
day on my way to the train station and I remembered
seeing used cameras for sale in one of their windows.
