Chapter 13
Where Does It All Begin?
A few years ago, I was sitting in my car in a Home
Depot parking lot near my farm in Canada with a young
friend. We’re listening to a discussion on the radio about
caffeine. A so-called expert said, "It’s virtually impossible
to give up caffeine cold turkey."1
The kid looks at me, a flicker of something in his eyes,
almost relief and says, “See. That’s why I can’t quit.”
A statement, not a question. A declaration.
I say, "Why?"
I wanted to see where he'd go with it.
He says, "Even the experts say it's impossible."
Ah. The experts. The convenient excuse.
I say, “What nonsense.”
Not loud. Not angry. Just a quiet dismissal.

Control, which is essentially how much control you feel
