Chapter 7 The Freeze
For forty-nine minutes, Henry thought they had done it.
The financial rollout went live at 9:30 on a Monday morning.
Every major bank, exchange, clearinghouse, and regulator in the United States was now tied into Verax. The integration had taken six months, three Senate hearings, two emergency court rulings, and more compromises than Henry wanted to admit.
At 9:31, nothing broke.
At 9:40, nothing broke.
By 10:00, the markets were open, the screens were green, and the world seemed to be breathing normally.
Henry stood in the monitoring room at the Federal Reserve annex, surrounded by analysts, lawyers, engineers, and officials pretending not to be terrified.
Jinji was at the main console, headphones around her neck, eyes moving across six screens.
Claire texted at 10:04.
We did it?
Henry looked at the room. Traders trading. Analysts analyzing. Numbers moving in clean lines across the screens.
