The Truth About Lying
His phone buzzed. His sister Claire. He stared at her
name on the screen, his thumb hovering over the decline
button. They hadn't spoken in two years, not since
Thanksgiving when she'd called him a "professional liar,”
and he'd responded by calling her "self-righteous and
unemployed." The fight had been ugly, the silence since, had
been worse.
He let it go to voicemail.
Three blocks later, he found himself standing outside a
coffee shop, staring at his reflection in the window. He
looked like a man who'd just walked away from a burning
building. Which, in a way, he had.
His phone buzzed again. Not Claire this time. A news
alert.
BREAKING: Cerulean Dynamics Admits to Falsifying
Safety Reports. Death Toll Rises to 47.
His stomach dropped. He knew that name. He knew it
intimately.
He found a bench and sat down hard, opening the article
with shaking hands.
