Jinji turned the laptop.
The categories appeared. Undocumented immigrants.
People with criminal records.
People with medical debt.
People with mental-health diagnoses. Domestic abuse survivors.
Sex workers.
Political dissidents.
Single parents in custody disputes.
People with false papers.
People with true stories that would destroy them. Vincent looked at the list for a long time.
Then he said, “You created an underclass.” Henry shook his head.
“No. We created a way to choose privacy.” Vincent looked at him.
“Privacy without participation is exile.”
The sentence landed cleanly.
Claire’s voice came through the speaker.
“I warned you.”
Henry looked at her.
“I know.”
