“I’ll try.”
He looked at her mother.
“Thank you for letting me come.” Her mother nodded.
At the door, Aimee called after him. “Don’t forget the mercy.”
Henry stopped.
“I won’t.”
He hoped that wasn’t a lie.
Jinji was still at the community center when Henry returned.
The screens lit her face in blue and white. She had been working too long. Her eyes were red. Her coffee had gone cold beside her.
“The opt-out rate is stabilizing,” she said without looking up.
“Seventeen percent.” “Seventeen point two.” “Forty million people.” “Forty-one, if you round up.” “Don’t.”
She looked at him then. “What?”
“Don’t make it sound cleaner.” Jinji leaned back.
