Chapter 11: The Cult of Quiet
Henry arrived at the coordinates at 6:04 AM, just as the sun was rising. The industrial district looked as he remembered, abandoned factories, empty warehouses, streets cracked and overgrown with weeds.
But something was different. There were people here. Not many. Enough. They moved quietly through the streets, not speaking, not making eye contact. Some carried signs. Others just walked.
Henry realized this wasn’t a protest.
It was the terminal stage of social dehydration.
The silence wasn’t symbolic. It was biological.
The human nervous system had become an executioner.
These people weren’t just avoiding data or the digital net of the Mandate. They were physically avoiding the Purge.
They moved with a terrifying, calculated stillness because they knew any spoken word, even a polite “Social Grace Fiction” or a forced “I’m fine,” risked triggering the Patch. To speak was to invite the Truth Heave.
In the Quiet Zone, the human voice had become an invitation to physical trauma, and the only way to avoid the Hammer was to stop being human altogether.
