"We need to move," Henry said. "If we have seventy-two hours, we can't waste them. We need to gather everyone who can help, scientists, philosophers, politicians—"
"Politicians?" Jinji laughed. "The same people who were about to nuke each other five minutes ago?"
"They're the ones who have to implement whatever solution we create," Henry said. "Like it or not, we need them."
His phone rang. He almost didn't answer, but something made him pick up.
"I assume you saw the message," Logan said. His voice was steady, but something underneath it wasn’t.
"Everyone saw it."
"Then you know we're out of time for philosophical debates." A pause. "I'm looking at my daughter right now, Henry. She's seven. She's doing homework at the kitchen table like this is a normal Tuesday. And I'm trying to figure out how to explain to her that an alien species is deciding whether she gets to grow up."
He hadn't known Logan had a daughter. Logan kept his personal life sealed off, separate from the calculations and strategies that defined him professionally.
