Henry felt something cold settle in his chest. "Dr. Sharma...”
"I'm not calling to stop you. I know I can't. I'm calling because I want you to know that when you go home tonight and sleep in your expensive bed, forty-seven people are still dead. And your clever words won’t bring them back—they just make it easier for the people who killed them to keep their jobs."
She hung up.
Henry stood in the hallway, the phone still pressed to his ear, listening to nothing.
He went home. He poured a drink. He tried to sleep.
He couldn't.
At 3:12 AM, he sat at his kitchen table and did something he hadn't done in years: he looked at his work clearly.
The tech company he'd helped through their data breach? They'd sold user information to foreign governments. The politician he'd rehabilitated after the scandal? He'd gone on to gut environmental protections that would poison a river.
