They knew what he was. They knew why they had called him.
Henry began.
“We don’t deny the deaths. We contain the meaning of them.”
Three pens moved at once.
“We make this about grief, not negligence. We make it about healing, not accountability. We create motion. Foundation, scholarships, memorial fund, third-party review, new safety initiative.”
Logan watched him closely.
“And the audits?” he asked.
“If they surface, you say the company acted on the best information available at the time.”
“That isn’t true.”
“No,” Henry said. “But it sounds close enough to truth that people will get tired before they reach the lie.”
The room went still.
Then one of the executives nodded.
There it was again.
Relief.
Henry spent the next hour building the wall.
A scapegoat, preferably someone already leaving.
A statement of shared sorrow with no admission of fault.
A victims’ fund large enough to photograph, small enough to survive accounting.
