"You can't just decide to be honest now and scrub fifteen years of lies."
"I know."
"And you definitely can't build some truth machine and force everyone else to do what you couldn't do yourself."
He reached across the table. "But I have to try. Because if I don't, then Dr. Sharma was right. I'm just a man who makes it easier for dangerous people to keep being dangerous. And I can't live with that anymore."
She took his hand. Her grip was tight. "If you're going to do this, you need to understand something. The truth doesn't fix things, Henry. It just shows you what's broken. And sometimes what's broken can't be fixed."
"I understand all that."
"Do you? Because I'm looking at you right now, and I see a man who thinks he can save the world by forcing it to be honest. But you can't even save yourself."
"Then help me. Please. I don’t think I can do this alone."
Claire was quiet for a long time. The city hummed outside the window.
"Okay," she said finally. "But on one condition."
"What?"
"You have to promise me that whatever you build, whatever system you create, you'll be the first one to use it.
