 The Truth About Lying
“Your mortgage is thirty-two hundred a month. Your checking account balance is not emotionally comforting. And you still haven’t published the confession.”
“Who are you?”
“Jinji Arata.”
Claire’s name rose in his mind.
“You know Claire?”
“I know she thinks you might be useful.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“No. It’s worse. It means she still hopes you’re not a coward.”
Henry shut his eyes.
The woman continued.
“Three years ago, I built a system that claimed it could detect deception from biometric stress markers. Heart rate, sweat response, micro-tremors, vocal strain. The client loved the accuracy rate.”
“Who was the client?” “A defense contractor.” His stomach tightened.
“They used it in Afghanistan,” Jinji said. “My system flagged a detainee as high-probability deceptive. It saw terror and called it a lie. It didn’t know he had a heart condition. It didn’t care that he was strapped to a chair in a room full of men who could kill him.”
Henry said nothing.
