Jinji said, “Slowly. It may spike if you panic.”
He peeled it free.
Nothing happened.
The patch lay in his palm like a dead insect.
Vincent said, “Now imagine that on a frightened child.” Henry closed his hand around the patch.
“I know.”
“No,” Vincent said. “You experienced discomfort. Do not mistake that for understanding.”
Henry looked at him.
The words stung because they deserved to.
Jinji shut the laptop.
“We’re not deploying tomorrow,” she said. “This was a test.”
“But you want to deploy.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her answer came quietly.
“Because someone else will. And they won’t have this conversation first.”
Claire shook her head.
“That can’t be the reason.”
“It may be the only reason that matters,” Jinji said. The main hall hummed beyond the wall.

People lying.
