Without hesitation, she drew a compact vial
from her pocket and sprayed the center with a
quick burst of acid.
The liquid spread in a crooked spiral across the
stone, eating away at the phrase. Even destruction
seemed to follow the pattern.
Carolina flinched. Henry gritted his teeth.
The woman stepped back, watching the center
words dissolve into smoking stone.
The man began photographing the remains.
“Now,” Henry said.
They moved in unison.
He lunged at the man, dropping him with a
clean elbow-to-temple strike. Carolina swept
behind the woman, disabling her with a pressure-
point takedown her uncle had taught her when she
was a student. Just in case, he’d said.
The woman dropped, momentarily paralyzed.
Henry grabbed the phone. “Satellite uplink
again.”
Carolina yanked the flash drive from the
woman’s neck: a sleek black pendant with a Chorus
sigil.
They sprinted up the steps and out into the
sunlit square, hearts hammering. Tourists drifted
