alone.
The hiss split, peeled back. The device blinked
alive, the screen humming with a channel only they
shared.
Carolina’s thumb hovered, then typed two
words that felt heavier than a confession:
“You there?”
A long pause. Jinji’s voice finally came back over
the speaker, not soft, not warm, but alive:
“Took you long enough.”
Carolina’s fingers tightened around the device.
“You waited a year to say that?”
Jinji’s breath came through the line, a faint hiss
of static. “Would you rather I lied and said I missed
you?”
Carolina swallowed. “You always were good at
making everything harder than it had to be.”
“And you,” Jinji shot back, “were always good
at running.”
Before she could decide whether to push or pull
away, the line shifted. A click, a flutter of text
spilling across her screen.
Carolina’s voice came through the line, sharp
with urgency. “What does this mean?”
