The first forty-nine minutes were perfect.
Henry watched the dashboard as Verax went live across the financial sector. The integration had taken six months of coordination with the Federal Reserve, the SEC, and the major exchanges. Now, at 9:30 a.m. Eastern, every trade, transaction, and financial statement in the United States was flowing through the truth-verification system.
The markets opened normally. Trading volume was typical for a Monday morning. The algorithms hummed, processing millions of data points per second, flagging discrepancies, verifying claims, making sure every number meant exactly what it said.
Henry’s phone buzzed with congratulations. Jinji sent a thumbs-up emoji. Claire texted: We did it. Even Vincent, skeptical to the end about the financial rollout, sent a brief: Congratulations.
At 10:19 AM, the first anomaly appeared.
