The screen flashes a command: ‘Relax’. The word gleams in bright yellow against the
backdrop of an orange-tinted sunrise, spilling over a dark mountain silhouette, an im-
age so vivid it might as well have been conjured by an artificial intelligence. The relaxa-
tion phase lasts a precise minute. I focus on breathing deeply, attempting to unwind,
trying to keep thoughts of lunch at bay.
Will the MAYRLIFE Medical Health Resort help me reduce stress?
I sit in a treatment room at the renowned MAYRLIFE detox centre, nestled in the idyllic
Altaussee region of Austria, preparing to undergo a stress regulation test using bio-
feedback. A series of slides on the screen guide me through alternating moments of
calm and tension. One moment, I’m tasked with solving a complex subtraction problem
in under nine seconds; the next, I’m asked to recount a ‘personally stressful situation’.
As I navigate this, sensors and a pulse oximeter clipped to my finger monitor my heart
rate, breathing, body temperature, and perspiration levels. The goal is to evaluate how
my body responds to stress. After the 75-minute session, I feel as though I’ve run
around Lake Altaussee three times.
Self-care, it turns out, is rather hard work. But then again, those who submit them-
selves to such tests at MAYRLIFE are no strangers to hard work. Since September, the
Medical Spa, popular among celebrities and health-conscious cosmopolitans, has
been offering the new ‘Leaders’ Excellence’ programme. Specifically designed for the
ever-travelling, time-pressed executive. Although I may not hold a ‘leader’ title, my fre-
quent flyer status certainly suggests I fit the profile. In just the first half of the year, I
accumulated over 80,000 air miles. I criss-cross the Atlantic several times a year, and
Europe multiple times a month. It’s thrilling, yes. But undeniably stressful. After a year
marked by health struggles, multiple relocations, and career transitions, I find myself
emotionally drained. The slightest provocation sends my heart racing; I snap at my
partner and find myself increasingly irritable.
For the overworked and overtravelled: the ‘Leaders’ Excellence’ programme
A two-week beach holiday might offer some relief, but the ‘Leaders’ Excellence’ pro-
gramme, like the entire MAYRLIFE philosophy, is about far more than just rest. It’s root-
ed in a meticulous analysis of both physical and mental health, followed by a bespoke
detox aimed at stimulating cellular renewal and restoring balance to the gut. The mes-
sage: The better you understand your body and address its needs through treatments,
supplements and tailored nutrition, the better equipped you will be to meet life’s de-
mands. This approach resonates deeply with a demographic that is on the one hand
accustomed to chronic jet lag, relentless performance pressures, and the constant
bombardment of technology and, on the other hand, increasingly despairs over it. The
programme’s target group is individuals who seek quick yet impactful solutions.
However, a week at MAYRLIFE also reveals that there are no quick fixes. The schedule is
packed with doctor’s appointments, diagnostic tests, and therapies. The dietary regi-
men is so stringent in some cases that you can find guests gathering around the ‘broth
bar’ in search of a pre-dinner snack. Yet, it seems to do be exactly what they need.
Many guests return, some even multiple times a year. It’s easy to see why: the location,
with its surreal beauty, offers an oasis of calm. The timeless, unhurried rhythm of
