Ice Swimming
WHAT IS IT?
It’s swimming in icy water,
usually below 10°C, to pro-
mote health and acclimatise
the body to the cold.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
You slowly enter the cold wa-
ter, breathe deeply into your
stomach – and then swim.
First-timers at MAYRLIFE’s
ice swimming session tend to
stay in the 3.5°C cold lake for
five to ten minutes. ‘If you
start to shiver, you should get
out quickly, enjoy the mo-
ment of strength,’ says cold
expert Josef Köberl, ‘and
dress warmly.’
WHY IS IT GOOD FOR ME?
The frosty experience
triggers a range of physio-
logical reactions in the body,
which also have a mentally
stimulating effect. Regular
ice swimming is believed
to strengthen the immune
system, alleviate depression
and anxiety, improve circula-
tion, and reduce inflamma-
tion and stress. The cold
stimulus also activates brown
fat tissue, which helps burn
calories.

Austrian Josef Köberl, 47, is a
multiple world record holder in
cold-water swimming. In water
at minus 0.23°C on the Hinter-
tux Glacier, he swam 1511.5
metres and, dressed only in
swimming trunks, he spent
2 hours, 30 minutes, and
53 seconds in a cabin filled
with ice cubes in Melk, Lower
Austria.

WHAT IS IT?
