6-114 Wear a face shield, apron, leggings, and gloves when melting or
pouring molten metal.
6-115 Wear suitable eye protection when assisting jobs where welding is
occurring.
6-116 Wear ANSI-approved cutting goggles when cutting with a torch.
Never substitute safety glasses for approved cutting goggles.
6-117 When using hoisting equipment, and the hoist operator cannot
maintain full view of the load, assign one person to signal the hoist
operator. Both the operator and the signal person must always use
the ANSI-approved system of hand signals. In the absence of radio
or telephone communications and where verbal communications
are impossible, always use the ANSI system of visual signals.
6-118 Do not leave hoisting equipment unattended with a load suspended
unless the load is safely blocked from below.
6-119 Use non conductive tag lines when required to stabilize loads and
direct loads.
6-120 When using an arc welder, welding screens or curtains should be
used to prevent hazards to others working in the area.
6-121 When using a torch or arc welder inside of shop always use local
exhaust ventilation (RamFan) or dilution ventilation (box fan or floor
fan) to reduce exposure to welding fumes and gases.
6-122 When using lathes, drill presses, shears and other shop equipment,
do not allow excessive accumulation of shavings, cuttings, and
other debris.
6-123 Use barrier creams and / or wash hands frequently when using
equipment that requires exposure to cutting oils.
6-124 Use appropriate respirator for the hazard. Always wear the
appropriate respirators when spray painting, cutting or welding,
surfaces that may contain paint, or any other health hazards,
(solvents, etc.). Contact the S&H Department for respirator selection
and approval.
6-125 Do not use oxygen or other pressurized gas to "blow off" material,
clothing or work surfaces.
6-126 Do not service or set up machinery and equipment unless a zero
energy state is achieved. Secure by mechanical means, block or
crib equipment. Lock, tag, and block out the equipment. Remove
keys from mobile equipment and chock wheels. Always follow
stationary and mobile equipment LOTO/BO procedures.
