                                          Chapter 11 – A Literal Prophecy
                   Jerusalem placed by conquest in the hands


               of that power which was to hold the “glorious


               land”  in  its  iron  grasp  till  it  had  utterly


               consumed it.




               VERSE 17. He shall also set his face to enter


               with the strength of his whole kingdom, and


               upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and


               he  shall  give  him  the  daughter  of  women,


               corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his


               side, neither be for him.



               Bishop Newton furnishes another reading for


               this  verse,  which  seems  more  clearly  to


               express the sense, as follows: “He shall also set


               his face to enter by force the whole kingdom.”


               Verse 16 brought us down to the conquest of


               Syria  and  Judea  by  the  Romans.  Rome  had


               previously  conquered  Macedon  and  Thrace.


               Egypt was now all that remained of the “whole
