the expression, “and which had not
worshiped the beast,” etc., shows that there is
another class introduced. The word is the
compound relative, ὅστις (hostis), not merely
the simple relative ὅς, and is defined by
Liddell and Scott, “Whosoever; whichsoever;
anyone who; anything which;” and by
Robinson, “One who; someone who;
whosoever; whatsoever.” As one class, John
saw the martyrs, and as another, he saw those
who had not worshiped the beast and his
image.
It is true that ὅστις is sometimes used as a
simple relative, as in 2 Corinthians 3:14;
Ephesians 1:23, but never in such
constructions as this, preceded by the
conjunction καὶ.
