soon became too slow for his ambition, and
arms were taken to defend and extend the
territory of the new religion. In the course of a
few years, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Africa and
Spain had been conquered by Saracen arms. It
was in 632 that Caled, the lieutenant of the
first caliph, began the conquest of Persia. His
efforts were crowned with victory. To every
man was offered death, or the acceptance of
the Mohammedan doctrine. With the sword
above their heads, multitudes thanked God for
Mohammed, His prophet.
When the tribes of Arabia were gathered for
the conquest of Syria, the caliph Abubeker
instructed the chiefs of the army as follows:
“When you fight the battles of the Lord, acquit
yourselves like men, without turning your
