               leading men and papers in the religious world,


               acknowledging  the  low  condition  of  the


               churches  generally,  and  the  many  evil


               practices  of  which  they  are  unblushingly


               guilty;  but  it  is  unnecessary  to  multiply



               testimony  on  this  point.  The  sad  and


               deplorable fact is too evident to be denied.



               The  leading  Methodist  paper,  the  Christian


               Advocate, of Aug. 30, 1883, contains an article


               headed  “The  Greatest  of  Questions,”  from


               which we copy these statements: —



               “1.  Disguise  it  as  you  like,  the  church,  in  a


               general sense, is spiritually in a rapid decline.


               While  it  grows  in  numbers  and  money,  it  is


               becoming extremely feeble and limited in its


               spirituality, both in the pulpit and the pew. It
