What happened in Adam six thousand years
ago in the Garden of Eden also happened to
us.
“Man was originally endowed with noble
powers and a well-balanced mind. He was
perfect in his being and in harmony with God.
His thoughts were pure, his aims holy. But
through disobedience, his powers were
perverted, and selfishness took the place of
love” {Steps to Christ, 17}.
Adam was mankind, and we all went down in
and with him, every one of us. Our powers
were perverted, and selfishness took the
place of love.
At their creation love was the only law Adam
and Eve needed to regulate their conduct one
to the other and to God. Love is
unselfishness. Love is the foundational
virtue.
