be severed from access to the tree of life

(Genesis 3:22). He no longer has the

provision made whereby his life energies

were renewed. Man began to deteriorate. He

is subject to mortality, which is the

               consequence of sin.

Selfishness, the mother of all sin, took the

place of love. Love and selfishness met that

day in the shade of Paradise, and selfishness

emerged into the bleak air of a world

engulfed in sin, with blood on his hands.

Is selfishness just one of many sins?

“Under the heading of selfishness came every

               other sin” {4t, 384}.

“Selfishness is the essence of depravity” {ST,

               December 25, 1901.9}.

“The image of God was marred and well-nigh

               obliterated” {Patriarch and Prophets, 595.2}.
