it cannot see much farther than a few feet
ahead. However, the porcupine is so smart
that it finds its way through the forest by its
sense of smell. It leaves scent posts wherever
it goes and constantly sniffs the breeze to tell
where it is. Occasionally, out of curiosity, it
even follows the scent of people as they walk
through the woods.
On a winter evening, a man lay in his warm
bed and had just fallen asleep when a loud
gnawing sound came from outside of his
room. He pulled his covers over his head,
hoping the racket would stop. It didn't!
Instead, it grew louder and louder. RAWR-
RAWR-RAWR. Annoyed and still half asleep,
he threw off his covers and pulled on a coat.
He stumbled to the door and peeked out.
There, standing on the steps was a huge
porcupine: The loud RAWR-RAWR-RAWR
was the sound of the porcupine chewing on
the wooden steps leading up to the back
door. The porcupine looked rather silly
