Ern Pynor presenting the Branch Trophy to Denis Trafford
I arrived in Australia on 18 October 1980, the day of the Australian General Election and the day Malcolm Fraser’s Government was returned to office. I was met at the Melbourne Airport by Ern and Alma Pynor. Ern was the CEO and Managing Director of NW.
He was a delightful person and extremely well regarded in the Australian market and to top it off, he was also an excellent sportsman, having played Australian Rules Football for Sturt in South Australia and had also represented South Australia at cricket. His claim to fame is he ad played lots of
cricket with Don Bradman as a spin bowler when he was in South Australia. Incidentally, it was through Ern and his relationship with Essendon Football Club that I eventually joined them and have now been a member for just over 30 years.
However, I must admit it took me some time to understand Australian Rules Football. But now I know- there are, I believe, no rules. I remember when it came to my first Grand Final and I was offered seats to attend, I never accepted them because it would have been a waste of time as I knew nothing about the game. It must have taken me two or three years before I started watching, even though we had a box at Waverly Park and when I eventually took over from Ern in 1982, I used to go to the box, welcome the guests and then get back in my car and go and watch rugby union.
