on them. This provided me with an opportunity of getting to understand the Australian market and avoiding the trap of just bringing with me what I had learned in my career in South Africa.
In completing the Corporate Plan, I found that while there were some similarities, there were many differences between Australia and South Africa. By the way, I did have the benefit of Alan Mason’s input, even though he was still in South Africa. I am sure his work from afar influenced his eventual immigration to Australia.
Free Strickland OBE and Ken Williams of Norwich H.O
Another person I met when I first came to Melbourne and who was tremendously supportive was Free Strickland AM OBE. Free was Chairman of Norwich Winterthur and was a real character. He had been a Spitfire pilot in WWII and was badly burnt in his crashed plane in Sicily. He was rescued and was one of the earliest people to be treated by a pioneering plastic surgeon called Archibald McEndoe whose patients came to be known as “The Guinea Pigs”.
Free always saw the bright side of life and never let his injuries deter him. He lost the use of his right hand so he continued playing tennis
