CHAPTER 13 - NORWICH WINTERTHUR INSURANCE AUSTRALIA LTD
Richard Oliver who was the major Workers Compensation claims agent to share their license with us and so IMC was established!
Norwin Corporate Services was another diversification. This was the company into which we put most of the non-insurance operations and was headed up by Jim Corsie. These included IMC, MAMS, MUA (NZ) and Insurance Exchange of Australia (IEA).
Our diversification and joint ventures created some tremendous relationships and long-term friendships. They also provided career development opportunities for many of the existing executives and introduced some of the people from the new ventures to the NW family in Australia and worldwide.
In those days it was like being a member of a family, working for the traditional and long standing British companies like Norwich. People were mobile and were seconded to all parts of the world. We had people in NW in Australia who had worked for the Norwich Group in the UK, South Africa, the Gulf states, India, Goa and Singapore to name but a few. Some of those with whom I had fantastic relationships included Geoffrey Gauci running MAMS, Andrew Black running MUA (NZ), Jim Corsie running Norwin Corporate Services.
Four particular diversifications are worthy of a story of their own. These are Concord Underwriting Agencies (Concord), IEA, Lion and Australian Associated Motor Insurers (AAMI). Simon Smith did write a book about AAMI called From Club to Corporation which is a great description of a fascinating period in the insurance market in Australia. AAMI is of course no more. Nowadays it is only a brand name of the Suncorp Group.
Much has happened in South Africa, we developed some fantastic business relationships, which not only provided NW with very significant revenue but also tremendous profit contributions and in some cases very long-standing friendships.
