CHAPTER 13 - NORWICH WINTERTHUR INSURANCE AUSTRALIA LTD
Probably the most significant venture we got into was Concord which also led to Aegis Underwriting Agencies and Wesfarmers Underwriting Agency (Wesfarmers) and to establishing a very close friendship with Ron Smith and Ian Parsons.
Over the years the relationship grew and Concord was very much part of the NW family. Ron and I started playing tennis on a regular basis and I won’t say who won or lost but I do say there were many line call disputes. It was through tennis that we also got together with Ken Armstrong of the IEA who thought he was the greatest tennis player. Some of the games were hilarious in that they were extremely competitive. The tennis would always be rounded off with a dinner and a lot of chatter about the industry markets.
The only disappointment I had is that all those that played tennis also played golf but they did not want to give me two shots a hole so I was excluded. I did however have an opportunity to appear on a number of golf courses during a trip to South Africa, but again there was always a dispute as to whether I was hitting the ball or alternatively if it was the caddy. The only good shots were attributed to the caddy.
Sometimes, just like in South Africa with Steyn’s, it took a leap of faith in the individuals to back the underwriting of some of this business. One of these was an agency which at the time was known as VFL Insurances and IEA owned by three gentlemen namely Ken Armstrong, Doc White and Barry Killham.
The connection with Ken Armstrong eventually led on to the Seal Rocks story, which I will tell you separately. Interestingly, when Lion was sold to CIC, we sold Lion Insurance Brokers to Barry Killham at IEA.
I also found myself as the agent for Chiyoda in Australia which has led on to Aioi about which I have also written separately.
Finally, NW was a shareholder/quota share underwriter of AAMI. AAMI had been established in 1934 as Club Motor Insurance with
