CHAPTER 19 - CONSUMER INTERESTS - THE 1990’S A PERIOD OF MASSIVE CHANGE

Bill Joscelyn
In the early days of discussions with government ministers the ISC and other government agencies about dispute resolution, codes of practice etc. I had much to do with Bill Joscelyn who was the CEO of the New South Wales GIO. Bill was also a member of the Federal Government General Insurance Consultative Committee and, at one of those meetings, famously told one of the consumer representatives who was criticising insurance company practices (very politely) that if he thought he could do it better he should start his own xxxx insurance company. Bill enjoyed cricket and in his playing days was an opening fast bowler. He continued that approach in business. At most of our meetings we ended up talking about reinsurance or cricket, but more than likely the latter.
Bill had excellent relations with cricketers and was involved with the NSW Cricket Board. Occasionally he would invite the board to a lunch at the GIO. Around the table he would have some ex- Aussie cricketers and on one or two occasions, myself who as I intimated before, could only be described as a cricket tragic. I was very impressed because while I had heard of some of many of the players I had only seen them on the cricket field when I was a young lad on one of their visits to Cape Town to play a test match.
At one of these lunches was Vivian Richards, one of the West Indies greats and we all reminisced about the past. At the close of the lunch everyone thanked Vivian for being there and Bill made a presentation to him of a black opal cufflink. Vivian said, what do I do, I have only got one cufflink and I have two sleeves? As quick as a flash Bill replied “but you have another lunch to attend and you will receive the other cufflink after you have spoken at that function” !
One thing about Bill was that he passionately disliked ICA and one or two of the other CEO’s. (The SIO in Victoria already had
