CHAPTER 1 - EARLY DAYS
Chapter 1 - Early Days
I was born in Port Elizabeth on 21 July 1935 and was the second eldest in the family..There were eight of us children so I had four brothers and three sisters and one way or another we all were connected to insurance both directly and with our partners. I didn’t have the opportunity to do my matric or to go to University, until I joined Eagle Star who sent me to college.Unlike today, most young people finished school at sixteen.
It is not true to say I was born into the insurance industry but it must have been close. My dad, Pop Daly, worked in insurance until he was well in his 80’s.for various insurers and later in life for Nedsual Insurance Brokers from where he eventually “retired”.
The concept of retiring never occurred to him. Indeed, retiring is not a concept known to the Daly’s at all. Here am I now in my 80s still working and enjoying it, so I suppose you can say I’ve inherited my work ethic from my father.
Colleagues and others often ask who am I, what drives me and why I continue to work and don’t just retire? This is something I don’t mind admitting often crosses my own mind and why don’t I just retire? I have always been extremely interested in the insurance industry.
While I can add value and have something to offer, I will continue to be involved, even though it might be limited to a Board role or encouraging the industry to build its relationship with their customers, ensuring they place value in its products.
